OPPO has introduced its latest iteration of the under-screen camera technology that is claimed to take selfies without comprising the quality of the pictures and the integrity of the screen. Unlike the earlier approaches that reduced the pixel density in the portion of the screen that covers the camera cutout, OPPO is now using smaller pixels to maintain the same 400 PPI sharpness as the rest of the OLED panel. OPPO says that users will not be able to notice “almost no visual difference between the under-screen camera area and the rest of the screen during everyday use, thereby creating a much more immersive visual experience.“

OPPO has also shown off the image of the prototype phone running an e-reader app to show the full-screen experience and has also published off a sample image clicked from the phone. Though the image seems to have been clicked in good light conditions there are still some colour artefacts in certain areas of the image but it does look considerably better than the first under-display camera technology on the ZTE Axon 20 5G. However, the ZTE Axon 30 is said to have improved the tech as the company is claiming the same 400 PPI density in the camera portion of the screen, plus better camera quality than the Axon 20.
To recall, OPPO has been working on the under-display camera technology for quite some time and it showed off the first demo at MWC Shanghai in 2019. However, the company is yet to use the technology on an actual commercial device but considering it’s been making significant improvements with each generation, we can expect a breakthrough in the coming months.
